TRIED DIETING BUT WITH NO SUCCESS?

You would be among the majority of people as 97% of diets fail...

"Hypnosis allows you to take control of the areas of your life that are out of control. In addition to helping clients control their weight, Ms. Zaccheo also works with children and adults with medical and psychological issues who are referred to her by area physicians. Some of those issues are addictions, allergies, anxiety, eating disorders, phobias, insomnia, impotence, pain management and stuttering, among others." (A referral by a licensed medical or psychological professional is a mandatory requirement in order for Ms. Zaccheo to work with clients on any medical or psychological issues.)

"Hypnosis is the mind's natural learning state, and we experience it on the way to waking or sleeping, or when we are watching television, or when as children we play imaginary games. Because it is a state of mind, you can snap out of it whenever you decide to, "said Ms Zaccheo"

She has conducted many successful sessions with clients seeking help with weight control, and she feels everyone can be helped, whether they wish to lose just 10 pounds or much more.

"Hypnotherapy helps people to tune into the natural signals that the body sends when it has a need for fuel. It is really the process of re-acquainting you with your own body and your body's signals for health, exercise and rest, which we have been trained over time to ignore."

She believes the ability to create change within ourselves exists within us, and hypnosis is a tool for helping us get in touch with that innate power and use it for positive results.

"Diets don't work because they're not addressing the problem, they're addressing the symptoms, and very often in ways that are not healthy for the body. Our programming around food is the oldest and most complex in the organic computer that is our mind. The mind starts in infancy to create many connections around food, most of which have nothing to do with food's intended purpose." Said Ms Zaccheo.

"Hypnosis allows people to understand the connections they have made with food, what they're using food or their weight for, and helps them create change from the inside out."

Her approach is called "cause hypnosis" and involves metaphorically peeling away the layers of the onion until she reaches the core of the subconscious where the primary connections or feelings around weight can be identified and addressed. According to Ms. Zaccheo, some weight issues have several layers, and others have to do more clearly with early connections between food as stress response, a means to love, a source of comfort or celebration, or even a numbing device.

Ms. Zaccheo charges $500 for the first three sessions. In her experience, a client will require three to five sessions to complete the process. Each subsequent session after the first three costs $150.00. "Using hypnosis is the anti-diet allowing people to return to their naturally intended way of eating, and staying there for the rest of their lives. Hypnosis is completely safe, much more so than taking pills or going on a diet that throws the body into starvation mode," she said.

Collinsville Hypnotist: Can hypnosis really help?

There are people who can be hypnotized and those who shouldn't try it under any circumstances. Have you ever wondered which category you fall into? Initially, you may have to toss out all you think you know about hypnosis. "You are getting very sleepy" lulls the soothing voice of the hypnotist (usually, a pocket watch swings from a chain held lightly in his fingers). Five subjects are seated in folding chairs on a stage. Suddenly one subject stands up and begins to strut and cluck like a chicken. After the audience dissolves in laughter, the hypnotist snaps his fingers dramatically and intones. "Sleep Johnny." "the man's head drops to his chest, he slumps in his chair, awaiting the next command. This is hypnosis we have seen on stage and screen. Most people think that this is the real deal. "Those people are exhibitionistic, and really enjoy being the center of attention, but that scenario demonstrates 'side-show' hypnosis and nothing that even vaguely resembles hypnotherapy," say Lisa Zaccheo. In fact those are the silly images she has worked to erase since her experience with valid hypnosis.

Unraveling Hypnosis Hype

"I am not a psychologist or a psychiatrist. I have a Bachelors of Science degree in Psychology." Said Zaccheo, owner and certified hypnotist at Mind Matters Hypnosis Center in Collinsville. She planned to get her Ph.D. in psychology until she encountered therapeutic hypnosis. "Psychology affects change by working with the conscious mind. Hypnotherapy bypasses the conscious and works directly with the subconscious mind," explained Zaccheo, who has added 500 course hours in clinical, forensic, regression and childhood/adolescent hypnotherapy to her resume.

But really, conscious, or subconscious, what's the difference?

"The beauty of the human subconscious is that the answers to our problems and questions are already there. Given the opportunity and proper guidance, our mind will help us find the solution to whatever is plaguing us," she said. Zaccheo is a professional who does not advertise. Many of her clients are referred to her by doctors chiropractors, psychiatrists, social workers, and even dentists. Before working with problems such as depression or anxiety, asthma, IBS, cancer and pain management, these concerns require a referral slip from a medical professional. "I do not practice medicine," she insisted. "I simply access and activate the part of their minds that enables healing on a variety of levels." Sometimes hypnosis will uncover the trauma that pushed a young woman over the edge and into a deep four-year depression.

Trauma Triggers Destructive Tendencies

Terry Chriswell, 37, has recently moved from Cheshire to Unionville. In the wake of her divorce, Chriswell had tried everything from marriage and family counseling, to holistic methods to subdue the anger and sadness. "I had met Lisa while working in advertising, years ago; I felt comfortable with her," she began. When Chriswell learned that Zaccheo had received her certification in Hypnotherapy she made the decision to give it a try. "I had daily thoughts like...'what is the point of living?' and cried every Sunday. I was surprised - the session wasn't the 'black hole' I envisioned it to be. I remember everything I said. I learned that it was all due to one moment in time during my divorce," she said. The traumatic moment occurred when Chriswell's husband revealed that he was in love with another woman. She removed her ring; they separated. He had found a younger woman. Chriswell was crushed. She had invested nine years in the relationship, dating him for seven years and only wed for two. "Most issues - physical, mental, emotional, can spring from just one emotionally charged experience in our lives," said Zaccheo. Chriswell added that she spent years of wasted time trying to figure out how to end her misery when it could have been solved in two hours. Later she addressed her food obsession, and is now maintaining a slender, healthy profile. "While growing up, I used food for acceptance," admitted the woman who is now joyfully planning her new life and next career. Chriswell felt it was important to share her story, but complete confidentiality is the cornerstone of Zaccheo's practice.

Kid's Issues, Smoking and Dateline NBC's Hypnotic Weight Loss

"I love working with children," said Zaccheo, 40, who addresses problems such as ADD, asthma, trauma/divorce recovery, bedwetting, self-esteem and self-confidence. "their fresh mental programming effects changes more rapidly that adults do," she added.

Of course, hypnosis as an answer to problems with smoking and weight loss has been profiled in the news recently. NBC's Dateline profiled five dieters trying to lose weight for their twenty-fifth high school reunion. After one week of Weight Watchers, Slim Fast, Atkins, a weight loss coach with limited calorie intake and exercise, "Marc" was assigned a hypnotist. Dr Tom Nicoli. Marc, the dieter using hypnosis, lost the highest percentage of body weight in the group - a total of 13 pounds. After 3 months he lost 40 pounds. After the Dateline follow-up this post July, he achieved his goal: a 43-pound weight loss. Zaccheo is the only hypnotist in Connecticut trained in this weight loss method. She hosted a seminar in Boston with Dr. Nicoli last June. Zaccheo works with each weight loss client, preparing specific reinforcement CDs to suit their individual needs.

Advertising Executive Keeps Losing Keys

Reclining comfortably in an easy chair, Joe Hoke (formerly of high profile advertising firm Mintz & Hoke) was practicing self-hypnosis under Zaccheo's supervision. He came to the Collinsville office out of curiosity. Hoke, 63, of Collinsville, hails from Binghamton, New York. He funded his college costs working as an attendant in a local mental hospital. "That prepared me for a career in advertising," he quipped. While working at the hospital, Hoke observed the way psychiatrists used hypnosis as a tool. When he began losing and misplacing keys and other necessary item with alarming frequency, he felt "angry and stupid." This Collinsville creative director, who recently open a new business, Lawson and Hoke, mixes humility with humor as he profiles the reason for his foray into hypnosis. "I had heard that Lisa was opening this Hypnosis Center. I was misplacing things. It made me late for meetings, and was really inconvenient. I thought I'd try this as an experiment; I wanted to experience it." Hoke, who also addresses creative dilemmas at work, learned that his problem was "not living in the moment." "I take a run or watch a little mindless TV; sometimes you jut need to relax your mind to solve a creative problem. Now, when I drop my keys somewhere, I'm becoming more conscious of what I'm doing. I've improved; I was losing my keys every 3 days. Now I've only misplaced them 3 times in the past 6 months. Not being in the moment isn't a good thing; that 'stop and smell the roses' expression was meant for those who are not living in the moment," he said.

But is it Safe?

"Most of us have heard the theory that most humans use only ten percent of their minds. Hypnosis is totally safe and allows us access to 90 percent of our minds," said Zaccheo. She cautions that those who should never use hypnosis are epileptics and heart surgery patients dealing with emotional issues. But 97 percent of the population can be hypnotized. Zaccheo claims that her practice will address everything from painless childbirth and chronic pain to phobias and procrastination. The hynotist offers an explanation of how this works.

"Procrastination is a learned behavior," said Zaccheo. "We are all about gaining pleasure and avoiding pain - so we procrastinate. Why? Because we view what we need to do as painful. The key to addressing this is at a mind level. The client learns to see immediate completion of a task as an achievement, realizing all the benefits and positives you earn when the task is complete. This teaches them to take the first step toward the task because more pain is involved when we procrastinate." This is relevant because procrastination heightens stress levels, while beginning the task in a timely fashion will produce better outcomes, insure a comfortable pace, and leave the client relaxed physically and mentally.

We can hypnotize ourselves. While driving many of us get to our destination but do not remember the drive. You are on automatic pilot: "Your subconscious just took over for you," says Zaccheo. She reveals that clients need not keep returning to her for never ending visits. "Hypnosis is extremely fast and I can usually address the problem in 1-5 sessions which are always one-on-one. Fears/phobias may be addressed in 1 session, weight loss: 3-5 sessions, smoking cessation is typically 2 sessions," she said.

MIND MATTERS© BRINGS DATELINE NBC'S HYPNOSIS WEIGHT LOSS SOLUTION TO CONNECTICUT

Lisa Zaccheo owner and lead hypnotist at Mind Matters© Hypnosis Center is the only hypnotist in Connecticut certified in Dr. Tom Nicoli's hypnotic weight loss program. Dateline chronicled the progress of five dieters striving to lose weight for their 25th high school reunion. Each dieter was assigned a different weight loss program: Weight Watchers, Slim Fast, Atkins, a weight loss coach, limited caloric intake with exercise and hypnosis. After one week Marc, the dieter working with hypnotist Dr. Tom Nicoli lost the highest percentage of body weight - a total of 13 pounds. After three months, he lost 37 pounds without any health-related side effects.

"Although hypnosis is not new, the Dateline program has effectively reintroduced it to the general public and has brought attention to its proven effectiveness," said Lisa Zaccheo, owner and lead hypnotist at Mind Matters Hypnosis Center. "Hypnosis is not what people typically think it is. A person in hypnosis is in total control of his or her actions and hears and remembers everything that takes place during the session. They are in fact an active participant talking and answering questions. The results are there and I'm very excited about bringing this weight loss program to Connecticut, as well as other hypnotic applications to clients who see the benefits of hypnosis after only a few one-on-one highly personalized sessions."

At the time of printing, Ms. Zaccheo is the only hypnotist in Connecticut using this specific technique after having studied with Dr. Tom Nicoli, the Dateline hypnotist, in Boston. Ms. Zaccheo hosted the training seminar with Dr. Nicoli to help him share his proven methods with select hypotists from around the country.

Numerous sources such as the National Institute of Health, the American Psychological Association, Harvard Medical School and others have documented the effectiveness of hypnosis for alleviating chronic pain, treatment of obesity and in helping broken bones heal more quickly. The applications for hypnosis are expansive - from smoking cessation, to weight loss, children's bedwetting, pain management during childbirth and conquering phobias. Less known but effective treatments include improving sports performance, memory and concentration, and alleviating insomnia, irritable bowel syndrome and sexual dysfunction.

Traditional medicine has taken a cue from Eastern philosophies and is beginning to explore the synergy of medicine with alternative practices, such as hypnosis, to provide the most effective overall treatment. More progressive medical insurances are quickly catching on as well and now cover its cost.
